How Can You Be A Bridge?

Bridges are used to connect one point to another as we traverse over waterways, landscape dips, other roads, and so on.  People are bridges as well.  We connect with each other in many ways from simply shared interests to professional connections.  Likewise, the Trinity of God: God the Father/Creator, God the Son/Jesus Christ, and God the Holy Spirit connect with us in various ways.  God created us to connect with Him and vice versa.  Equally, we can connect as Believers with non-believers and plant a seed into someone wherein God is able to harvest the soul into eternal life.

Our Testimony Is Our Story

Many times throughout our own life book, we have chapters that we fill.  From birth to teenage years, challenges, school chapters, adulthood chapters, and so many other commentaries and adventures that we find ourselves sharing with others.  God uses our life's testimonies, our journeys, and our experiences to reach others.  Similar circumstances, episodes can be used as a way to reach another person whether a Believer who needs comfort or a lost soul that needs the light of Jesus.

While the Triumphant Entry also known as Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy or Passion Week, it was truly a pathway for Christ and ultimately the Heavenly Father to redeem you so that you could have eternal life.

Time and God's Mercy

God's timeline is a far different sight picture than we humans will ever grasp.  In this sermon, we'll look at Creation and what God's Word says about our time, or rather what we know as time.  Quoting and using information from the careful studies of Archbishop E.V. Ussher, we explore key events that guide us through key moments and times stamps.  More importantly, how long and how full of patience and mercy God has for every single one of us.

Staying Alive

While this particular sermon is directed at the church in which I preached at, this sermon is applicable to other churches that may be enduring a similar experience.  The primary message here is that, unless it is clear from God to shut the doors, we need to do our best to fight to keep God's church alive!

So much of our personal lives and the episodes contained in our lives can pull us in multiple directions.  Our hobbies and interests, especially, can distract us on Our Relationship with God.

Effect a Change

As I watch over the news of the day; the headlines, the social media stories, the monthly awareness', and such, I came to a small subject... Effect a Change.  It's not a new thing.  It's not a new hashtag buzzword.  In fact, it is an exceedingly long subject, yet I will do my best to be succinct.

Simply one word in the topic can send someone's blood boiling; change.  In my experience and those around me, it comes in the form of "I hate change."  Yet for this discussion, change is something that most people seem to have a longing desire for with seldom success.

How can we Effect a Change?  What does it take to change an item in your life?  We comically seek out a new year to begin a new page in our life with a resolution.  How often do we veer away from that resolution?  Is that resolution ever resolved?

Referring back to news headlines, I saw an article on my social media feed in which a mom realized her grave decision, leaving her child in the car while she ran an errand..."he paid the price" was the outtake of the headline.  Being a father, I nearly well-up with tears when I see or read about a child succombing to any kind of injury, let alone death.

We read about how people get frustrated over social media postings and instead of working them out or simply ignoring what are most likely lies, their anger manifests into a physical action with later regret.

How many of us have some form of addiction?  We can deny it and to some we can even call it minor or not a health or similar life threatening issue, yet it is an addiction.  Most of mankind will agree that the abuse of prescription drugs/painkillers, illegal drugs, alcoholism, and so on are life threatening addictions, however there are not as life threatening addictions as well.  Take for instance drinking pop (aka soda), though a can/bottle once a day or occasionally is not bad, a steady diet of a six-pack or more daily could pose health risks later in life.  Yet, it is still considered an addition if you have a problem putting that can aside for any length of time.  We can say that same about coffee, tea, and so on.

There are multitudes of addictions that are in our present day.  What addiction are you dealing with that you would like to remove yourself from?  What chain keeps you anchored from other events?  Think about how the addiction could be eating away valuable time that could be used elsewhere for your family, your spouse, serving God, working on the to-do/honey-do list, etc.

I once was consumed with a lack of time management.  Today, I still fight a battle for time, but I have learned to better use my time for my God, family, and the variety of household necessities that need to be completed.  Very seldom do I have time to keep up on the latest television show/series or am wasteful of my time in other potential addictions.  I once was an addict to pop but was able to combat it with looking at what impact it was having on my life and restricting how much I intake.

I Effected a Change.  I chose to make a change in my life to better myself for my family and myself.

Though this is not a biblical sermon, it is a message of change.  God wants change in your life.  Obviously, that change is for the sinner/unbeliever of Christ to become a believer and to follow Christ, sharing the message of what Jesus did and how He freed us from our sins by dying on the cross, burying our sins and raising again after three days.  All we need to do is believe and accept that we were once sinners and now we believe in the Savior.

Is there a change you need to effect?  Consider what is chaining/hindering you from what you want in health, life, or your future and make that movement and perform the change.

Effect a Change in your life for you are the only one that can make that action.

Inspiration for Today - Be ye grateful and thankful

What started out as a twitter post, grew into a small blog post of thanksgiving, primarily due to the amount of references within Scripture simply on one word, Thanksgiving.

America traces this day back to a combined meal with the pilgrims and the Native Americans with a proclamation made by President Abraham Lincoln to create a national holiday.  For Christians, Scripture is filled and instructs mankind to be thankful for many things.  Some of which include songs of, sacrifices of, as well as simply being thankful in all things.

A great song was written by Johnson Oatman in 1897 called Count Your Blessings takes portions of Scriptures and places them into what seemingly is a call from himself and others to count the good, the blessings, that has been provided.  It is a simple but powerful song of reminding that we need to be thankful daily for the provisions that have been bestowed upon us by God.  He grants them to both the believer and unbeliever.

I could cover a grand list of what I am thankful for and I quite imagine that you could as well if you paused and began to write down a list of things you can be grateful for.  Recently, I was listening to a talk show about a mother who wrote a book while she was bed-stricken during her pregnancy.  She indicated that they were having financial problems to keep up with the maintenance of the house.  Her husband kept a positive attitude, making light of their situation to keep them thinking positive.  As she laid one day, in the midst of feeling low she began to jot down, as a prayer, what she was thankful for.  She relayed that what started out as a presumptuous couple lines turned into three full pages and later into a book.  I apologize that I do not recall her name but she was on Family Life Today.

As for myself, I can begin a similar book for the family I grew up in, a home, my wife and son, food, clothing, a job, reliable transportation, friends, my parents, and so on.  I find myself thanking God nearly all day which only a year ago was a simple thanks for the food and a few things.

God is a loving Father that gives abundantly to His children.  Scripture indicates that following:

Proclaim His works with Thanksgiving - Psalm 26:7
Come into His presence with Thanksgiving - Psalm 95:2
Enter His gates with Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:4
Sing with Thanksgiving - Psalm 147:7
Sacrifice with Thanksgiving - Jonah 2:9
Pray and petition with Thanksgiving - Philippians 4:6
Be vigilant in prayer with Thanksgiving - Colossians 4:2
Receive food with Thanksgiving - 1 Timothy 4:3-4

No matter your circumstance, no matter how low or grand your situation, be thankful.  There are many times in which we endure difficult and challenging situations in life that we cannot see any blessing.  God is still blessing you, thank Him...as difficult as it may be, thank Him and be thankful.

Studying

The Holy Spirit struck me the other day concerning the study of God and all that He is.  No, this is not a class, but as I was ingesting God's Word last Sunday, a few key words came to mind which led me to a small devotional as well as a self-examination.

How many of us have interests, hobbies, sports, or other such things that help us get through, well, life?  For some, it is their favorite sports team/s and their sport that keeps them going.  They will study a player and how they move, pass the ball, and so forth.  For others, it is geo-caching where they are carefully reading over instructions to seek out that buried/hidden treasure.

As for me, I am a television show person.  Mostly from the 80s and because of time, I am far behind on current television shows.  With that said and with some confession, I thoroughly enjoyed and still enjoy many shows from that era such as the Dukes of Hazzard, Knight Rider, Airwolf, A-Team, Alf, and many, many cartoons.

As a younger adult, I watched and rewatched many of these shows and would discover so many mistakes throughout the episodes.  Take for instance the Dukes of Hazzard, aside from reused footage of the jumps, I would notice how many skid marks were on the dirt or asphalt as I saw a car slide to a halt.  I began to keep count and discovered that it took at least one, but sometimes as much as five skids before I saw what the director or editor wanted me, the viewer, to see.

I would notice the steam from the actor's breath when they were recording in the early morning hours or see the boom mic in the shadows.  Occasionally, I would see the sound stage buildings towering in the background of the Hazzard town set as well.

On Knight Rider, I would catch the indestructible K.I.T.T. dent his fender when driving off of the main road onto a field.  Or catch a lapel mic while the actor is driving the car.

Over and over, I found myself studying these and other shows and I am quite sure I'd either make a film company money or break them because of the lack of detail I catch.

With that much passion for man-made entertainment, can we safely ask ourselves do we study God's Word with that much passion?  Do we study each word within a verse to understand what God is - present tense - IS saying to us?  Do we casually read it and check off that we've read the Bible in a year?  Do we read a chapter or two and claim that we are in God's Word daily?

Take a look at a simple Scripture: Romans 15:13  NKJV
"Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit."

Now - In context, looking over Romans 15, we would see that the word Now could be used like therefore, or, and now because of the previous Scriptural references to Glorify God.

Because the people of God, those that praise Him...the Gentiles also have hope, and now...

... may - What is may?  It is a word used to allow, permit, or perhaps in this wording, may is more likely to invite in this instance.

the God - something that has been lost over the years is the reverence of refering to God with a capital G.  The God, the only God who is not only God the creator, God the father, but here He is referred to as The God of hope.  He provides us with an eternal, assured hope.  Not a vain hope but a concrete expectation for things to come to include heaven, eternal life, and so on.

Fill - This is a simple word.  Fill but there are many instances and meaning in this word as well.  Does it mean to fill to the brim?  Does it mean to satisfy?  Does it mean supply?  In this context, fill is most likely the best word but emphasized as the fill you full or cram/pack.  Who?

You - God is speaking to you.  May the God of hope fill or cram/pack you full...of what?

With all joy and peace - He wants you to have a fulfilling, joyful and peace-filled life.  Living for Him does this.  Living and believing in Him and what His Son, Jesus, did on the cross to wipe away your sins, allows that God of hope to pack you full of joy and peace.  The joy from living a free life, the happiness of having a new family, the joy of being able to go direct to the One that can do miracles and the peace of knowing all of this and the peace that you will live eternally free.

in - Though in is a preposition, in this context, this could be used as a mathematical addition, a + sign or could be swapped for the word while.

believing - Our faith is based upon a blind faith.  One that is not seen.  Unlike the Apostles who saw Christ and saw Him die and raise to life again, we have a blind faith but it is a faith that comes straight from our soul.  While we feel it in ourselves, the Holy Spirit is also felt and leads us through many things and to be filled with rejoicing praise, sometimes when we do not initiate it.

That - this word, typically interchanged with which, is a word that could be phrased as so that or therefore.

You - God continues to speak to you.

May - Again, this could be changed out with allow or permit.  Permitting the next action to occur or be a continuation from the previous.  Another word that would work well is will.

Abound - Many words could be used such as thrive, prosper, and overflow, the latter perhaps would be a good equal to this word.  God is a God that wants to give us abundantly and, many times, He overflows us with blessings, joy, peace, and so on.

in hope - we see hope again and like before, it is more of an assured conclusion.  It is not a wishful hope but a fulfilling hope.

by the power - self-explanatory but what is this power?  It is a supernatural power that will be delivered.

of the Holy Spirit - The third in the Triune God.  The Helper of Christ, the Spirit of the Living God lives within us and helps us to experience God more than we could ever fathom.

Here is another way to look at the Scripture from our single verse study of God:  "Because we glorify God, even as Gentiles, now we invite the God of an assured, eternal expection, to pack you full of overwhelming happiness and an eternal peace with your heart-felt faith so that you may or will overflow in a fulfilling hope delivered by the supernatual power of the Holy Spirit that lives within your soul."

A deep, deep study of God on one verse.  The Bible is full of this power, full of wisdom, and we have this in the palm of our hands, hard copy or digitally.  I encourage you to study God's Word as much, if not moreso, as you study a tv show, sport, hobby, etc.

Would you save a life?

Recently, we lost a treasured actor who brought us all laughs in many forms.  Equally, he brought us tenderness as well as humbleness.  Though this is not meant to be a tribute to a favorite actor of mine, Robin Williams' death did come at a surprise and perhaps placed a bigger "blip" on the radar for topics such as depression, loneliness, and suicide.  Another topic that sprang to mind today was what would you do if you knew he was going to make the final choice?  Think carefully.  Would you have saved him?

Let's bring it closer to home.  Another hot topic has been the rise in children being left in cars, windows closed, unattended for hours to be barely alive if not dead.  What would you do?

If a friend, spouse, relative, co-worker, even your pet were to dart into a roadway with a oncoming car, would you run out to save them?  Would you?  In your mind you might be saying, "yes."

What are you getting at Wyatt?  I am stretching out my words, my virtual arm and asking you a serious question, "Can I help you live?"

"Help me live?"  What do you mean Wyatt?

We would blindly save a child who has fallen into a well.  We would not think twice to run down a highway to save a runaway dog.  Correct?  Why, then, would you not want to live forever?

Here comes the curveball...  Perhaps.  Please do not stop reading.  Please give serious thought and attention for the remainder of this blog.  Yes, I am speaking to my friend, my cousin, my aunt, my parent, my co-worker, my minister, my child, my colleague.  I am reaching out to you because I care and love you enough to tell you about a life that is worth living for.  I am jumping into the roadway of your life, blocking that oncoming car of life so that you can be spared.  A future that holds a reward like no other.

"Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends." - John 15:13

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.  For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved." - John 3:16-17

God loved you!  God loved you enough to send His only Son to represent your sins, your failings, your crimes so that you could live in freedom; to have an eternal, blissful life.

Like the Soldier, Airman, Sailor, or Marine who jumps into the rain of bullets, shrapnel, or mortar fire to save his/her wounded friend, Jesus stepped in so that you could live.

"I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly." - John 10:10b

God wants you to have an abundant life.  He wants you to enjoy life on this earth and in heaven.

But I am a good person.  That should count for something.  You may have a noble heart but let me ask you 3 quick questions to measure that.

1)  Have you ever stolen anything?  How about time from work?  How about a pen from work?
2)  Have you ever lied about anything; white lies count?
3)  Have you ever lusted after another?  This includes the pinup posters, looking at people on the beach, or perhaps an actor/actress on TV or a movie.

If you said Yes to 1, what are you?  A thief
If you said Yes to 2, what are you?  A liar
If you said Yes to 3, what are you?  An adulterer  How am I an adulterer, I never slept with that person?  No, but have you craved after that person?  "But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart."  - Matthew 5:28  Jesus tells us that lusting is equal to the physical act of adultery.

In a courtroom setting, using only the 10 Commandments as our guidelines and having asking you only 3 of those commandments, do you think that a judge would declare you guilty or innocent?

God is a forgiving God.  "The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance." - 2 Peter 3:9  Repent means to turn away or to change your ways.  God wants you to believe in Jesus and rely on Him.

"for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God," - Romans 3:23  Everyone has sinned.  It is in our blood to lie, to steal, to lust, to covet, and so on.  God is holy and has no room in heaven for sin.  "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." - Romans 6:23  We have 2 directions to go...eternal life in a bliss and joyful Heaven or torment and pain in hell.

I am reaching out to you, again, yes you old friend, kin, relative, co-worker.  Yes you in Pennsylvania, Idaho, New Jersey, Texas, Michigan, Arkansas, North Dakota, Alabama, New York, California,
Great Britain, Maryland, Virginia, Illinois, Missouri, and everywhere else...I am talking straight to you.  I want you to have an everlasting life.

Sin was paid for.  Jesus stepped in and took your sin.  He died to give you life.  "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.  Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him."  - Romans 5:8-9

Allow me to end with this... "that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.  For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.  For the Scripture says, 'Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.'  For 'whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.'"  - Romans 10:9-11 & 13.

If you would like to turn your life around.  If you would like to have an eternal life, please pray out to Jesus.  There is no script.  There is no prepared prayer to say.  All that is required is you wholeheartedly speak, yes with your mouth and voice, directly to Jesus and believe in Him.  Believe that He has saved you from sin.  "
“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved."  - Acts 16:31b

Intro

Welcome to Servant Wyatt's blog! Who is Servant Wyatt? Well, I am a servant of God Almighty and have been called to preach His true Word to you. Prayerfully, God will use me and this blog to inspire, enrich, encourage, and strengthen you whether as an unbeliever of God and His Son, Jesus Christ, or as a believer.

Why am I doing this? Honestly, I have had the itch to do some writing for quite some time. I have been yearning to preach and, perhaps, pastor a church yet my military lifestyle and schedule has nearly prohibited me from doing so. I have had opportunities provided, having preached and administratively managed churches off and on over the course of 9 years. I am an online student with Liberty University seeking a Bachelors in Religion (very good course, btw).

What will this blog entail? God is the pilot here! I plan to write encouraging things as well as using Scriptures. At the same time, I may share things from my past, comical things, honestly, God knows what will be posted :)

Am I using this as a stepping stone? Honestly, this is a light step, however, throughout the years I have envisioned writing encouraging articles (blogs), sermons, and so on. With the advent of social networks, I pray that I can make this more like a resource for those seeking encouragement.
